celtic solstice revealed

I love the reveal of Bonnie hunters celtic solstice mystery quilt.   I have most of my parts complete and was able to put a few blocks together.  You can see all of the wonderful quilts coming together here!

I will post more when I can get back into my sewing room.   For now,  it is much to cold for me down  there!

Celtic Solstice part 5

I have been plugging away a my myster quilt.  I have managed to complete clues 1, 2 and 4.  I still have about half way to go on both clues 3 and 5.

Let's talk about clue 5.  I just knew we were going to be adding wings!  I used my accuquilt cutter to cut the side triangles and the half square triangle.  I was able to whip up one block quickly and it turned out perfect!

However, the next day when I say down to sew te rest, none were coming out te correct size.  That scant 1/4 inch seam came bak to haunt me.  No matter how skimpy I made te seam, they still measure about 1/8 too short. 

If anyone has any tips, I would love to eat them.  I managed to he 20 done!

And here is what I have done so far all in little baggies waiting for the next clue!

I am loving my color choices and cannot wait to see it come together!

Accuquilt Hunter Star die

I tried out my new hunter star die today.  I cut my fabric strips at 4 inches and ran enough to complete one full block.  It took only seconds to have all the pieces where if I had to cut them with the ruler, it would have taken much longer!

Sewing them together took longer then it should have.  I did not have the scan 1/4 inch perfected and therefore my blocks did not measure out correctly.

Then I had a little oops on this block

Once I got past the minor issues, the block came together nicely.  It measures only about 12 1/4 when it should measure 12 1/2.  I will work on that pesky scant quarter inch tomorrow.  

I love this die and will be making a quilt with the blacks and grays.  It will take no time at all to cut them out and get them stitched.  This die is a must have in your collection!

Celtic Solstice part 4

I was finally able to start part 4 of my mystery quilt.  I had to get my Christmas obligations done first.  So, I have step 1 complete, step 2 has less then 30 to go, step 3 I have 5 pinwheels done and most of my half square triangles made and step 4 I have 12 done.

I am hoping to have all parts caught up by Fridays clue!

I am finally getting the hang if the little pinwheel on the back.  Look how cute they are!

Update:  I now have 40 4 patches done.  I have also finished clue 2!  So clue 1 and 2 are done, clue 3 I have half done and clue 4 I have 80 to go,

I am looking forward to seeing this

Celtic Solstice and some new accuquilt dies!

It felt like Christmas the other day when the UPS man delivered my package.  I ordered some new accuquilt dies last week.  My main reason for ordering new dies was because I am doing Bonnie hunters Celtic Solstice mystery quilt.  I wanted the dies to use for each clue instead of using the traditional method.  Well I ended up doing clue 1 with the tri rec rulers and I started to do clue 2 but decided to wait for my order.

These are the dies I ordered!  I got the parrallegram, triangle in a square, hunters star, Alphabet letters, log cabin, 1 1/2 half square triangles and I think the last one is a 3 inch half square triangle

The log cabin looks like it will have to be made scrappy which I am ok with.  I just love scrappy quilts!

This alphabet die will come in real handy when I am making personalized hooded bath towels.  Cutting out the letters is time consuming and this will definitely save some time.

I used the parrallegram die along with the 1 1/2 inch half square triangle die to make some of the blocks in Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt.  I found that I liked using  the half square triangle along with the 3 1/2 x 2 inch rectangle.

The hunter star die is one I am most excited about.  I made one using the rulers and the pieces were a little wonky.  I look forward to making one with this die.

Here is my fabric that I cut for my Celtic Solstice quilt.

 Look how perfect these pieces are cut!  I can honestly say that I saved a ton of time by not having to cut these with a rotary cutter.  I am loving my accuquilt more and more each day!

Once I get caught up with christmas stuff, I will do a post on each one of the dies.  Until then, I need to finish my clues for the mystery quilt.

Celtic Solstice Mystery quilt

I am working on Bonnie Hunter's newest mystery quilt called Celtic Solstice.  I decided to go with different colors then she chose because I want to keep it for myself and I need to love the colors.

I was able to complete clue #1 with not much trouble. For the small quilt, we had to make 92 units with orange (my burgundy) and 96 units with neutral background.    I had it done before the second clue came out.

For clue 2, we had to make chevrons.  For the small quilt, I needed to make 100 chevrons.  I am still working on this clue.  I had trouble in the beginning making these little buggers.  None of mine were coming out properly.  I tried to do it using the method that Bonnie suggested but they were not measuring out properly.  In the end, I found using the 3.5 x 2 inch center piece and cutting the corner pieces out with my accuquilt cutter, they would come out perfectly.  I have less then 30 to go!

Clue #3!  I think Bonnie was being nice to us knowing that clue 2 was going to be a bear!  For clue 2, we had to make half square triangles and then make 25 pinwheels.  I used a paper pieced method that I found online at Quilting and What not blog.  I am half way done with this clue.

I am hoping to have both clue 2 and 3 done by this Friday when clue 4 comes out.  So far, I am loving my colors and look forward to seeing what this quilt becomes!

Trying out my Sizzix Owl Applique!

I purchased the Owl appliqué die from Hobby Lobby the other day.  So today I took out my Sizzix Fabi cutter and put her to the test.

I chose fabrics from my scraps to use for my trial run.  I added a paper back fusible to each piece and away I went!

The pieces roll through the die cutter very easily and I had no problems with pieces not cutting properly.  It took no time at all to cut out my pieces.

I also used my stems and leaves Accuquilt die for the branch and leaves.   I placed all the pieces on an appliqué fusing sheet and fused all of the little pieces into one appliqué piece.

How cute is this?  Now I can take this piece and iron it onto a pice of freezer paper and put it into a binder.  Then it will be ready for me to use in a future project!
